I went out to eat tonight and their was about a 30 min wait. I decided to take my 4 year old and walk over to Petco to look at the fish since he needed some entertainment.

It was just sad. The Algae was pretty bad in all of the tanks. They had some Betas in tiny bowls of yellowed water...then I saw him. Their\\re was a large (~9-10") Pleco in one tank and he wasnt moving and didnt look to good. I leaned in to get a closer look and the guy was dead. Just sitting there on the bottom.

I told the girl at the register and her response was "oh", but didnt even go to look.

:mad2:

Well, that is to be expected like most other stores. I would suggest reporting your situation to the proper authorities.
Why is it to be expected? I just came from two different Petsmarts and two different Petcos looking for driftwood, all with good looking tanks and stock. Don't bash an entire chain because one store doesn't know how to run a business or handle their stock. I know it's easy to do because the name is on each store but it isn't the correct way to view a company.

I actually meant that most stores are expected to be good or bad. Sorry for not being specific. I feel however that if possible, report the situation to either the company management or at least the proper authorities so the situation itself can be rectified.

Eh. It goes this way whether it's a chain or an LFS. Plenty of places have nasty tanks and plenty of places have nice tanks. For sure I am reluctant to buy fish from several stores in my area. And there are others from which I readily buy fish. And it's an even mix of LFSs and big box store locations on both ends of the spectrum.

Neither the Petco in town, nor Petsmart would be able to house such a large pleco. This is quite a shame.......RIP big guy!

There are bad managers and untrained employees in every type of establishment, really sucks when the lack of knowledge harms or even worse kills a living creature. I give props to the employees who actually care enough to learn and apply there knowledge to the best of thier abilitys.

very sad, we don't have an Petcos here in Savannah but we do have a Petsmart and they do an excellent job with keeping their tanks clean and all the fish in there always look healthy, even the massive betta stock.
