I picked up a package of the plant bulbs at Petco around a week ago.

The package went MIA, I can't find it. The plant stem has grown about 5 inches in about 7 days or so. I'd like to identify the plant. Is anyone familiar with what comes from the bulb packages? I'll post a pic after it becomes identifiable, hopefully tomorrow.

Well, the bulbs are aquatic plants, and are usually Onions, Waterlilies or Aponos as mentioned.

You might be able to ID it by the bulb itself.

The Onion Plant is white and, well, onion-shaped.
The Waterlily is a round black ball.
The Apono is a brown, furry peanut.

Do these need any special substrate to grow in, will standard gravel work?
What kind of lighting do they need?

ive got one started in a bare bottom tank. substrate seems to be moot to get the bulbs started. however, once its started, regular gravel should do fine. just keep it on the small side.

I have an assortment of these bulbs growing under 1.8 watts per gallon of lighting. They pretty hardy plants if you get them to sprout.

I have these as well. I threw a bunch of them in an unplanted 72gallon tank for some color. I got about a 2 out of 3 ratio of plants budding from the bulbs for a total of about 12 plants in there.

But they are very pretty and a lot of the lilies have really come in nicely. The best part is that I have had these in the tank for about 2 months and my 72 is just the regular lighting and they have all done very well. I also threw a couple in my 5 gallon betta tank (but this is planted with four leaf clover and microsword in there). Only one sprouted. It looks like the african aponogeton. Very pretty, but I constantly have to trim back the leaves and flower buds because it grows so fast and likes to fill the top of my tank with flowers which blocks the light for the microsword. Bad flowers. :)

Anyway, I really like them. They supposedly have a guarantee to bud, but you have to send the bulb to some place in California or something like that, and they send you a new one. After the price of a stamp, it was too close to the cost of the bulb in the first place, so I just buy another pack. :)

Anyway, I really like them, they seem to be doing well in both my 3wpg betta tank and my normal lighted 72g tank. So well worth the little bit of money they cost.
