I recently went to petco with my friend and his mom. Some of the crap they said there was crazy. She asked if she can put 4 goldfish in a 5g and they said YES! Then theyt had a Beta information thing and it said beata's prefer smaller tanks. They said the smaller the better. I think I'll be staying away for a while.
Yeah, you'd be surprised how many people sell fish that have no idea what they're doing. I bought a Sarasa Comet at WalMart this weekend. He was about 3" long and the WalMart lady said that he wouldn't get any bigger than that.
Then I came across this website and I found out that he'll probably get up to about a foot long!! Now I have to invest in a bigger tank.
The only chain pet store i buy fish from is PetSmart. They tend to have more knowledgable employees, and the fish tanks are kept in good condition. I have never liked Petco
In general I don't buy my fish from petco..all tgoo often I see the 'under observations ' sign.
on the good side ..they aren't selling those diseased fish.
I do by my malaysian driftwood from them(they keep it in the reptiles section - label says safe for aquarium) med pieces are around $8
I tend to shop petsmart for goodies like filters etc as they will price match web prices.
but most of my fish I get from breeders or LFS that specialize in fish.
as far as advice..consistently petsmart gives better advice. petco is so-so walmart (atleast the one near my house) stupid advice..I try to give them the benefit of the doubt..but yesterday iced it. I never heard this said before yesterday 'the fish grow to the size ot their tank as the clerk sold three angel fish to a guy who was buying a 10 gallon coldwater set up (read no heater) oh yeah and serpae tetras atleast he sold the guy 5.. (the guy had no clue what the nitrogen cycle was and the clerk was selling him aquasafe to make the water 'safe'
