The pond with some Triops
I don't know if this is the right forum topic, but here it goes:

Don't you just hate PETCO? It's like they don't even care about animals, especially the fish. I went there and found 5 angelfish in a puny 5 gallon tank. The tetra section - everything but the extremely hardy ones live. I found 20 tetras stacked on top of each other, dead and stuck on the filter . And the salt water section, I don't even want to type what they do. But the thing that got me the most is what they believe. Oh, sure chlorine kills germs and stuff. So you wash your net in tap water and then immediately start netting people's fish out? Their water qualities are also horrible. super high nitrate. Period. It's amazing that they even know how to cycle. And their freshwater plants are all rotting or dead!

Opinions?

Everyone feels the same way about Petco. That is why I stay away from them. If you do not like what they do,then do not go there. If enough people cared to boycott a place like this, it might make a difference, but there are always people that will go there that either do not know and are clueless about what goes on there or they just do not care.

I am pretty fortunate, the Petco that I go to has great tanks. All the fish appear healthy without any signs of ich or any other disease. There of course is the occasional dead fish, but nothing at massacre levels. The plants are touch and go, but well what can you do. The plants I have bought from there always ended up looking so much better than any other plants I bought elsewhere. Also, the bettas are always in great shape. No striping or fin rot. I guess it all depends on the store.

Keep in mind that petco's are franchise locations... so your results will vary by franchise to franchise location.

exactly, the two nearest locations to me (which are at least 8-10 miles away) are pretty clean and the staff is courteous and somewhat knowledgable. though some of them have a medium amount of dead losses and i haven't bought and fish from Petco's, per se. I have have gotten snails, shrimps and plants from them and they are all doing extremely well. (although my blue mystery snail just dissappeared a month ago.....)

seriously, not all petcos are the same. it ALWAYS depends on the management. my petco is great. it is controlled (for the most part) by a wise and experienced aquarist, and they don't have too many dead fish. it got my seal of approval, and not many places do. not all stores are built the same. and you're beating a horse so dead that it's nothing but a skeleton.

my petco is very bad,not only the tanks, one of the people working there said to a woman that she could easily put 2 pleco's with her betta in a 2.5 gal minibow and a school if tetras.

i told the person that she could fit the betta and that was it,but she told me that the expert fishkeeper had already told her what to get.
