I'm cycling my new 55 gal and was looking at substrates to use.

The coarse sand from Home Depot seems to keep coming up, but what are the potential affects if any on PH & KH?

PH is 8 from the tap also in tank
KH is ~6

Will certain sand/substrate matter cause a rise in these numbers or possibly help lower them?

I'm looking at possibly the coarse blasting sand to save some money and mixing it with some fine gravel for coloration.

Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Sand should be inert and not alter your pH at all unless it's specifically meant to like marine sand.

I have play sand from the hardware store, rinse rinse rinse, and really love it. Would like to change my gravel tank to that also. i just put a sponge over the intake tube tomake sure no sand is sucked into the filter. Good luck in your choice.

Thanks!

The Biotope I'm setting up(Amazon River) calls for Coarse River Sand, so I'm hoping the sand I get will be coarse enough for it. The Rivers here in So. Cal aren't the cleanest things around so I'd rather not risk it with that stuff.

I really was hoping I could find some dark sand so fish colors really stand out.

I guess we'll see!

Definitely don't try sand from local areas. Not only is it illegal in most places, it may have all kinds of nasty stuff ranging from trash and pollutants to parasites and other harmful microbes.

Pool or Play sand are the cheapest and their coarseness can vary a great deal (as can grain size and weight) but you shouldn't have too much trouble finding some. :)
