PH Question

well I have no knowlage or info on this can you explane what the peramiters are suposed to be for tropical fish and any where I can read about it?

http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/ph.htm http://www.firsttankguide.net/ph.php http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/phalkalinity/a/aa061301.htm Here is some stuff to start reading , just what is the param's of the water, an after reading above links you may just want to leave it alone. But i keep a community tank with tetras , neons an cardinals that like a more acidic PH thats why i like to keep my tanks at 7.2 max. mid point range of all fish in the tank. I have some large limestone rocks in my 20 gal. that helps that tank alot the less PH bouncing around is best.( Prolly why i got algae growing on them an nowhere else in the tank, Green carpet like algae ) Once i got my system going , i do more water changes then most would do to keep the balance going.

7.2 max isnt very acidic.. and something a bit general, not directed just at this.. just because fish are native to an area that may have a lower or higher pH doesnt necessarily mean that they 'like' it, per se.. ive kept a variety of fish from cichlids to goldfish to characins, inverts of all kinds, and ive never once had to change my pH. as long as you keep it stable, they WILL adapt.

as for tuning the pH to make them more 'lively' and to increase their 'vitality', also, never had to do it and have had healthy long lived fish in every case. I don't know who decided that fish NEED the same pH as their native waters, but thats wrong.

one thing to consider with fish..are they captive raised or wild caught.
captive raised fish may already be adapted to a pH that is already out of the 'norm.

so most are well suited for a oH which is higher than what the species is typically referred to in the text books.

wild caught is a different story..tho over time most will adapt to a ph out of the 'norm'.

I have seen the case with wild angels and wild discus. however, you may need to change the water in the case of breeding..but that is an entirely different thread.

No 7.2 is not acidic, but , in a community tank it is. Not to argue but keeping neons an cardinal tetras it is high.......an they can adapt , but with what loses? I still say best to try an keep a fish in it's natural habitial waters , then to put undo stress on the fish by making it change to what your local water conditions are, period. the high end of the neutral zone

at that pH of 7.2, not much.

the pH needs to be on up around 7.8 to 8.0 to really cause long term problems with these guys from what I have read.

I have read about calcium blockages developing in neons kept in high pH water, but I can't verify this as I have only read about it.

I have kept cardinals for years in relatively high pH water (for them - 7.4-7.6) with no problems.

However, spawning them in that pH might be a different story..probably need to dilute with RO or use peat for that...

Ah an thats what i am trying to do,m ph needs to be at 6.8 or less to do that, with a temp of 82 to 84 degrees, they spawn up top , so java moss is recommended

oh an btw , i gave hime or her , both the good an bad of doing a ph correction. i wish when i came here someone would have given me things to read instead of saying excactly what they thought from what i wrote

Yeah usualy if some one tells me somthing that I don't know alot about like the PH levels for example I usualy ask for somthing I can read on to help give me mor knowlage. If some one has opinions on somthing they read somthing some whare and should be able to share.
