ok, someone suggested this fish for a (possible) 55gal. i want to get this summer. I did a little research and it seems to be a pretty interesting fish. I do have a few questions about it though.

From what I have read about it, it's not a good idea to put 2 triggers in the same tank. Is this true?...(would 2 picasso triggers fit in a 55gal. anyway?)

Are they pretty hardy?

Any that has, has had, them have any comments about keeping them?

thanks

I had a Picasso for over a year but took him back to the fish store because I wanted to keep Inverts. Which brings me to my first point. Triggers can't be kept with Invertebrates (Snails, Crabs, Shrimp...) typically. There are a couple types that might not hurt them, but it's still a big risk.

That being said, a full grown Picasso will outgrow a 55 gallon tank at full adulthood. But that could take several years. Mine went from about 3 to 6 inches (maybe only 5inches) in the year I had it. So if you do plan on keeping the fish for the long term, get a small one and consider what you will do when it reaches 8 to 12 inches.

Can you keep more than 1? Many people keep multiple Triggers in the same tank, however I don't know about keeping Multiples of the same kind. I think there is a good chance for fighting but someone else can share first hand experience with you on that.

Triggers are very hardy fish in general, but with all aquarium life keeping good water chemistry is #1. I wouldn't do it, but I do know someone that had a Picasso Trigger survive a Tank cycle with no problems... I consider that pretty hardy.

triggers

Well, my brother once bought a trigger and boy did that thing eat alot. I've noticed that if you buy a fish from a store that is being kept with fish of the same species, you can usually buy 2 or 3 and put them in your tank w/o any problems. But I bought a clown that was housed with 20 or 30 other clowns in the fish store with no problems, but since its been in my tank alone for awhile, it has gotten territorial and will kill any other clown it sees. So the point is, if you want a few fish of the same species buy them all at once from the same tank before any of them get the chance to become territorial. of course, if you notice them fighting before you buy them, then don't even think about it. And yes, humu humu triggers will eat inverts including, from what i've been told, anemones. Ghost shrimp are what I seen triggers eat, but like i said they eat alot, they get very big and need plenty of space to swim.

I had a few triggers from huma huma or Picasso.. and Niger once both at the same time in the tank. I had no problems what so ever for over 8 months of time. They where in my 50 G tank without any problems. They never attacked my flame angle nor my clown or damsel. I only brought them back cause I wanted to add some inverts to the tank. Ye they do eat alot and my tank require more water changes, They mostly ate frozen food as I didn't have a secondary tank to host the live food. Trigers are very hardy but make sure you do not want any inverts in the tank.
