I want to revamp one of my 55-gal tanks. Looking for good tankmates that would compliment my Pictus Cats.

Would like to change from gravel to sand and change from a cheap HOB to a better AquaClear filter. I have 3 Pictus Cats (each about 7") and a 9" common pleco. I want to keep the cats but I am considering trading the pleco. (My LFS always wants larger plecos) The pleco is pretty messy. The tank is the most visible tank in the house and has black and pink gravel now. (Can someone explain why I would make such a hideous tank?) Any ideas for tankmates?

How many severums? Also, anything special with severums? I keep africans (mbuna) with lots of stacked rock/caves. Are severums 'new world' cichlids? Should I use lots of driftwood? I really want to avoid a planted tank since I have killed anything that resembles plants. (the only plant I can grow is algae)

Severums are South American cichlids. I'd get only one for it. All you need is feed it plenty of various foods particularly veggies. They will tear up any plants you put with the exception of Java ferns and possibly anubias.:) You can use lots of driftwoods as long as there is space between them for the sev to fit in although I doubt the sevs will really establish a territory anyway but they can use the woods to seek refuge at night. My two sevs don't even try to establish territories but parade in front most of the time.

If I go with a sev, could I get some dithers? Maybe giant danios or something to add to the action in the tank. I have always shyed away from a single fish tank. They tend to look 'lonesome'. I love my pictus, but they are not real exciting to watch either.

I am considering the sev, but any other suggestions out there?

Giant danios are fine. Congo tetras are another but you are forgetting your pictus might gobble them.

Thought maybe the 'giant' danio would be ok. They have been with serpae tetras an a scissor raspora for a while with no losses. I learned how big the pictus mouth is and thier appetite over a school of neons. Expensive snack. Thanks for the reminder.

You've got a lot of options for tankmates..

rainbowfish
barbs
giant danios
cichlids
swordtails
mollies

If it were my 55, i'd add a RTS, Pair of GBRs, a few killies for the top... etc

IMO, the only fish you couldn't put with them are fish that could fit in its mouth. Overall it's a very peaceful fish with a large mouth.

They like their own cave. That's important. Mine will share with the loaches, but the barbs have to keep out. :grinyes:

I'm shocked my ottos made it, but he doesn't touch them.

Don't try zebra danios. :headshake2: They won't work.

davexstumpe . . . is that a German Blue Ram (GBR) in your avitar? Those are beautiful. How many would go nicely in the 55? Seems like I have read a lot of posts that they are hard to keep. Any words of wisdom on these? I don't know if I want a red tailed shark, but I like the idea of the rams and some killies. I will read up on these. Thanks.
