i would suggest against having piranha in your 55g tank. You could probably have only one in there, as they get pretty big and aggressive. Having 2 would also cause problems, because one would dominate over the other.

So your only option would be to have one in your tank, or have more in a larger tank.

I wouldn't do Red Bellies in anything less than 100 gallons. Six is a great number to have, but you wouldn't be able to do them in a 55. RB's need a good amount of room to properly dispurse aggression as well as the need for a lot of open swimming space.

I could see you starting out with 6 babies in a 55...but I would plan on upgrading that fairly soon. If you're not set on red bellies, you could do a smaller species of piranha, like Catoprion mento, Whimple Piranha. They stay pretty small (6") so you wouldn't have to worry about upgrading as quickly if you had RB's...which get about a foot.

alrighty i was lookin on line as i asked you the question and i saw the same things that you have all told me thanks to you all agian as always

My pet store has 2 of them in the same tank together, looks like a 55g

that's almost never an indication that the fish need that environment.

Megadittos! Why do you want the pirannah? If you like the shape and color of the fish there is an other option...I think they get bigger than the pirannah but they are (from what I have read and heard) easier to place with other fish, and that is the pacu. It is easier on the filtration system because it is primarily a vegetarian http://www.****************/catalog_pages/wild/pacu.htm

Also, iirc, it is illegal to have pirannah in some areas.

Just a few thoughts.
