Looking to get a new 30-40 gallon tank in the coming months. Are places like Petco, Petsmart (or even Wal-mart) good places to get glass aquarium 'kits' (come with pretty much all the equipment you need)? Not looking for the absolute best price, but reasonable and good quality. Also, for 30-40 gallon, would you say go glass or acrylic tank? Weight is a little bit of a concern, but is it worth the savings to go acrylic (i.e. how much do you save by going acrylic or are there other advantages at this size?)?

Personally, I'm not a fan of acrylic aquariums. They may look cool, but glass is easier to see through, and generall looks more like a fish tank to me. And it doesn't scratch as easily.

Thanks...

so it Petco, Petsmart or even Wal-mart good quality and reasonable prices?

Walmart has a good price a a 29 gal kit. They are probably a little cheaper than Petco or somethiing like that. If you want to know anything about specific fish, stay away from Walmart. Better off asking someone that knows something about fish at a pet store.

Just my 2 cents

Before I got my 10 gal kit a couple months ago, I looked at 2 LFSs, walmart, and pet* (petsmart, petco, petsupermart). They were all pretty much the same for pretty much the same.

Only real difference I could tell between all the offerings was whether they came with a heater (tropical vs. goldfish), the types of filter offered (aquaclear/whisper/biowheel), and the lighting (flourescent vs. incandescent). I opted for the marienland setup - biowheel filter, no heater, incandescent light. Replaced the incandescent bulbs with small profile flourescents from walmart.

Or check out ebay, it seems to be tank selling time if you are not against a used set up :D , From what I understand the kits just don't usually have all that great of filters with them, and if you shop around sometimes you can gather your own stuff for cheaper than a kit. IME the smaller chain store kits are much more expensive than the big stores are. Even filters I see a difference of 10-15 $. I think that is where the small store by me makes its money
