Plakat betta M or F?

This is my daughters black Dragon plakat betta and she thinks it’s a female. She’s wanting to get another if it is. It’s a 5 gallon and the betta is about 6 months old and about 2”. I know nothing about bettas other than husbandry, so if it is a female, can she have another? If so, would male or female be better?

Regardless if its a male or a female, I wouldn't put any other bettas in their. I've heard that if its even two or three female bettas together in a small tank they will fight.

Well, I'm no betta expert, but I'm guessing a female. I don't think a 5g is big enough to house more than 1 female....Maybe a F & M pair...for a very short time. Why not just enjoy the betta she has? A 5g is very small...

Thanks, female is my guess too, just with plakats I’m not that confident in my guess. I’m good leaving it alone, just when I told my daughter I think it’s a female, she asked if that means she could get another LOL but a solo betta it will be

This was my first and last specialty Betta , after a few months it became covered in tumors and died. Poor genetics is my guess

Oh darn, that would be my guess too, sorry you had problems. That's how it is sometimes with highly bred fish, they're just not too "sturdy". Bred for other aspects than longevity
