i have a (approx) 6 x 4 x 2 koi vat im planning on making into a goldfish pond in spring. i have decided i want to make a goldfish observatory by inverting a 3x1x1 foot tank in the pond, but cant think of what to make a stand out of which will hold the tank up. i dont want to use wood as it may leach something into the water and will rot over time, but i dont know what else i could make it from. im guessing there will be a lot of pressure from the pulling down of the water which will be in the tank above the surface so am unsure how strong this needs to be. also should the footing be on something on the base of the pond so it isnt a small area touching the bottom that all the force will be put on? any help greatly appreciated, thanks.

Maybe build a frame out of pvc pipes and fill the pipes with sand to weigh it down? I don't know if that would be sturdy enough or not.

I have seen a lot of the inverted tanks supported with PVC. The bases could be set in plant pots filled with sand or suitable material.

 thank you, brilliant ideas! love this site

i was thinking me and my husband can get on either end of it and do it together. though im thinking i may stick with a 2 foot tank instead of a 3 foot to help with the weight issues, though i know it will still be very heavy. im planning on a free standing stand for it, with a plant trough either side and the lengths of it open to the front so we can slide it on once its full. plenty of time to plan yet though.

Very cool.

i would build it and then set it up and use a tube to suction the air out.

do you think a normal vax wet/dry hoover would have enough power to draw out the air in there? i have one and obviously being wet/dry it wont matter if it slurps up some of the water. this will make life much easier if it will work  then i can just put the pipe into the tank under water and blow a bit of air in there to get the water out and redo it from time to time for cleaning etc.
