I'm not an expert but heres some questions that would help us alot and probably would be asked by others...
what watts do you have on your tank?
have you used any ferts for the plant?
how old is the plant (when did you get it)?
As for my experience when I first got red melon sword plant, most of it older leaves died and eventually sprouted new leaves. I fert once in a while. I"m lazy about that.

its in a 10 gallon tank. the plant is fairly small and its about 2 weeks old. the wattage is 15 or 25 watts.

Amazon swords are often grown emersed (above water). The nurseries do this because it's cheaper and faster. After submersion the emersed leaves die off over the course of a couple months and new, submerged growth leaves will start to emerge. Are the dieing leaves spear shaped with a narrow stem followed by a thickening at the main leaf? That would be emersed growth. The submerged leaves begin widening immediately at the base.

Amazon Swords

Prune it (leaf and stem) and let it grow. Not too many leaves at one time. Add Iron Chelate. Amazon Swords need the extra iron. Check your water to see if any other nutrients are missing.
