plant newbie

Thanks a bunch.

How did you calculate my KH based on the data provided, and how did you come up with a CO2 of 27ppm? The chart I use (http://www.aquabotanic.com/charts.htm) lets you graph KH (with a range from 0-12) and pH to get CO2, but I measured alkalinity of 100. Am I missing a major point?

BTW, you aquaria folk have to settle on some simple terminology! KH, GH, alkalinity, alkaline, basicity, mM, ppm, mg/L, hardness, buffering capacity, etc, etc, etc.... It's a veritable quagmire of outlandish nomenclature!!!

Talk to you later,

The range from 0-12 is dKH, degrees KH. Your measure of 100, I assumed was in ppm, which is about 5.6 degrees. I used Chuck Gadd's aquarium calculator:

I agree on the terminology. I think that people are coming about on some things, like alkalinity, but the term KH has been around for so long that it's slow to change. Imagine trying to bring the whole of the USA to the metric system? It will take time.
