Hi guys,

I recently bought a clump of dwarf hairgrass on the internet and i was wondering if it is able to grow and spread out if i just put it in sand? I noticed how other people have a layer of organic soil on the bottom and then a layer of sand, but is is ok if i dont have the organic soil? I will be using seachem flourish excel for my 10 gallon tank. I am fairly inexperienced in planted tanks. Thank you very much.

I have my DHG in plain black tahitian moon sand. I split it into small clumps & tried to plant it in a staggered checker-board pattern (emphasis on tried, lol). I have not yet added ferts, but I do have a couple Flourish root tabs waiting to be stuck in. You will need some kind of root fertilizer. You can also purchase Osmocote fertilizer pellets, freeze a few granules into shallow ice cubes & stick the ice cube under your sand/plants. This will distribute the fertilizer without harming your water column. Good luck!

I have a small batch growing in a sand only tank. So far it is doing rather well. This tank is a high light set up with CO2 and dry fert dosing so that may contribute to it.

I have dwarf hairgrass in sand (3M colorquartz) with DIY CO2, 2WPG of T5HO, and no ferts. It is doing miserably, and covered in algae. There are some new runners, but they also get covered in algae soon. I think this plant needs goodies directly to its roots rather than from the water..
