I know most people think that cichlids would tear up any plant or dig them up, but mine dont dig. And anything that goes into the tank is loved by one them because they can hid in it. If i put something in there and put rocks around it would it have a chance?

sure get something tough like java fern, you don't have to bury it, if its not shredded in the first day it will bloom. good luck

The question is how hard are you willing to work, and how much frustration are you willing to put up with. A mated pair of JD's will dig at some point, but there are a multitude of plants that you could try, and probably have some success with. If you want to plant your tank, and watch it grow in serene beauty, buy some mollies. If you are willing to replant a few times, settle for a little plant loss, and trim some damaged leaves, you can plant the cichlid tank. Once the plants get rooted good, or stuck down tight to some driftwood depending on the plant, they should be O.k. , but it will never be the easy consistant tank that folks with more docile fish are accustomed to.

I have various anubias, Vals, crypts, lots of java fern and java moss, bolbitus, melon sword, and red temple, the red temple is new, and not growing as well as I'd like, but after the first 2 weeks it is staying put, and I no longer have to replant it every day or so. everything else is rooted in well and stays put despite some abuse from the fish.
