I have a 35G tank that currently has:
  • 1 blue gourami
  • 2 corys
  • 8 cardinal tetras
I need more fish. I saw some platties at the store that looked nice and colourful, would they be ok with the gourami? How many platties usually like being together in a tank? Any other suggestions that would fit in nicely with this tank? Thanks.

Oh, one more thing, my tank has been up and running for a few months now. The last month or so I have been having trouble with brown algae. Reading some posts here though it looks like that is normal for a new tank and I shouldn't worry cause it will go away on its own soon. Do i have that right?

Thanks I will check out the platties then. I did have 4 cories originally, but two of them died for some reason.

:iagree: get a few more cories (preferably the same kind) and then like 4 or 5 platies since they are quite social fish! you'll love the platies they're quite entertaining IMO!

Cories and tetras like being in groups, as do platies. Gouramis do best as singletons IMO. Watch your stocking level--more cories and/or more tetras + platies = probably overstocked.

The diatoms, while ugly, are indeed normal, particularly in new tanks. They are supposed to go away on their own after several months to a YEAR (!) Until then, do what I do and just wipe 'em off (dang diatoms, grrr). Platies and gouramis like to eat them but don't expect either fish to make a visible dent in them.

u can add a group of six cories and platties as they like being in small shoals

Your gourami will be fine with the platies. I've had a platy and a gourami together before and they were bossom buddies. Just watch out you don't overstock your tank. Good luck.

Your gourami would probably be very happy to eat the many platy fry that will eventually arrive.
