Yet another question about my fish and their output...

I have three platies in a 10g quarantine tank, and they all look fine (have had them about a week) but sometimes they have what could be described as "stringy white poop." At most other times their poo is normal looking, thick and dark.

Should I worry about the possibility of internal parasites, or is this just normal? They are eating a variety of food, mostly flake with some brine shrimp and sometimes a piece of algae wafer.

Thanks!

I can't be sure about platies, I don't have alot of experience with them myself... but with that being said... other fish I've owned that have white stringy poo ended up being infected with some sort of internal parasite.

I would keep them in the QT and carefully watch them. See how they react to the different foods you give them. If you find something is def wrong, you can treat the tank.

Quartine them for another few weeks to be sure.

Any idea what to use to treat internal parasites? I can't seem to find any info on anything other than sheep dewormer...

I find platies are prone to constipation and white poo, especially if fed too much of a meaty or protein filled diet (i.e. your typical tropical flake food). They do best on veggie based diets. Try feeding them veggie flakes and wafers for a week and see if you still see white poo. My bet is they are getting an improper balance in their diet. I've been breeding platies on and off for over 10 years, and their best coloration and breeding potential comes out with veggie based diets.

My platies are definitely parasite free, yet if they get a good meal of shrimp pellets or blood worms they often end up with stringy white poo for a day or two.
