Please Help Ammo Off The Charts

OK I dont know whats happening here. Everything was fine till thursday morning. I get up and my tank is WHITE! like cloud white. I do my barrage of tests and everything is fine except ammo. its 4.0:eek: :eek: . So I do a 50% water change and everything sorta cleared up. Ammo went to .25 and everthing else was still good. So tonight I test everything again and ammo is back up to 4.0:eek: :eek: and another 50% water change. I added ammo lock, stress zyme and stress coat as directed. Anyone have any ideas what the heck is going on?? I have used the freshwater master kit from aq pharm for all my tests. My fish are showing no real signs of stress I guess. Im kinda new to the fish keeping. There all just swimming around as usual. Any info will be greatly appreciated
 
Maybe the bait from fishing in your tank has started to rot?

J/K, but I will say something serious to make up for that.

What sorts of fish do you have in the tank? How many? How big is the tank?

How long have you had it?

Did it finish a cycle, or are you in the middle of one right now?

Did you just change the filtration pad? I find that that usually has an effect on my tank.

You need to do some water changing right now.
 
How long has your tank been set up for? Did you recently add in any fish? You're right in doing the water change but I wouldn't add the Ammo-Lock. You're getting a good cycle right now and I'd strongly recommend taking whatever fish you have back and letting the tank cycle itself through. If not, then frequent water changes will be needed, especially with nitrites on the horizon. I'd say 25% every other day, and feed on the days that you don't clean. If the fish are at the top gasping for air, try throwing an airstone in there connected to an air pump to help them out a bit.

I have a 10gal tank!!!!

1)2 zebra danios, 2black skirt tetras, 1 silvertip, 1 angel
2)3weeks.
3)No, dont know.
4)No, same pad.
5)DONE!!


IF the bacteria are supposed to "grow" on the filter cartridge wouldnt it be a bad idea to change it?

Angels don't handle cycles so well. I'd return it, as well as the Black Skirts, unless someone here tells you otherwise.

BTW, How large is the tank?
 
I added the angel and the silvertip last week and the tetras and the danios have been in the tank since day one.I have a 10gal tank.
 
Angel--too big for a 10g--too sensitive for cycling.

Returning that will help immensely, as will getting rid of the other fish that you just added.

4-6 Danios is enough for a 10g, but, if you could return them all, and fishless cycle instead, that would be for the best.

Napsterhaven, your water is white due to a bacterial bloom as your tank has really just begun to cycle...do return all the fish except the danios..and read up on the fish you are buying...find out thier needs and requirements before buying them. Read up on setting up tanks, cycling and "new tank syndrome". Stay away from live plants until you have mastered the basics...take things slow and educate yourself on what you're doing and what you would like to do with your tank. Knowledge is your best tool if you plan to be successful at keeping an aquarium, otherwise you are setting yourself up for multiple problems and failures in the long run.

But at least you are here asking questions, and that is a "good" thing. Keep monitoring your water parameters and doing small, daily water changes...if your fish die, do not get discouraged...and try not to over-stock your 10 gallon tank. That tank, when cycled and mature, can hold about 6 danios, 6 small tetras, and maybe a couple of cory cats or otos(but not all at once, build it up slowly). Stay away from fish that grow over 3" long..especially angels...mine is well over 6" long and 7-8" tall...and is kept in a 55 gallon tank...I would never keep an angel in a 10 gallon. Just be patient and make good decisions...everything will work out just fine...good luck.
