Hi I recently finished cycling(fishless) my 55 gallon aquarium with two filters one I went out to buy a whisper advanced power filter 30-60 gallon and one that came with it which was for a 40 gallon aquarium. I would like some opinions on the selection of fish that I have made to put in my tank soon. I love the blue acara and would like to put one in my tank don't know if it is a good idea, both for space and aggressiveness, to put two in there? Also I would like to have 1 redtailed black shark and would like to know if there would be any problem with the blue acara also in there? That's as far as my selection goes and would like to know of any other suggestions to stock my tank, without overcrowding it , to make it look good. Any critques and suggestions would be greatly appreciated thank you.

given the fact that a blue acara would only get to 8" max, females are smaller, I don't see a problem with haveing one in a 55, maybe a 75 would be a better size since that tank isn't as narrow but you might be able to get away with it in the 55. acaras get large enough to eat small fish like neons so plan acordingly.

as to having two acaras together, it depends on the individual and if you were to atempt it I would have a smaller tank set up to move one of them to if one started beating up on the other as some are just mean like that. but then others would be fine, just can't tell untill you see but a larger tank is more likely to be successful with 2 of them.

a red tailed black shark would be ok in the tank with a cichlid like the acara but I wouldn't put two of the sharks or any fish that are shaped like they are, no yoyo loaches, rainbow sharks, or bala sharks in with them.

I'd have one acara, one RTBS, and 6-8 medium-large tetras like bleeding hearts, columbian blue tetras or something like scisortail rasboras, or giant danios

that would be a balance between haveing some variety as to fish and keeping the stocking levels down to where it is easyer to maintain.

I would suggest some pseudotropeus zebra or other mbuna with lots of rockwork. or maybe some rams, convicts or firemouths.

Thank you all for your responses greatly appreciated. Here are a couple of more combinations of cichlids without the RTBS:
1. 1 Blue Acara, 2 Blue convicts, maybe a jack dempsey if not over crowding.
2. 1 Blue Acara, 1 green terror, 1 jack dempsey.
3. 1 Blue Acara, 3 convicts.
4. 1 Blue Acara, 3 rainbow cichlids.
5. 1 Blue Acara, 3 festivums.
I would appreciate someone to tell me which combos would do well. Also any critiques, advice or even adjustments to help me out would also be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you.
