need help, got tank second hand want to set up with tropical fish. first off i need have no idea how to determine the size of tank in gallons. it is a corner bowfront tank that measures 43"front by 26" two sides and 24" deep. right now it is full of water with plastic plants. ph is normal neutral per the test strip. we have one kissing gourami because my wife liked them. had two but one jumped out. we have a cascade 200 filter not sure what the heater is but it is working keeping constant 76 degrees. any input or help with setting up would be great. we like balla sharks and tinfoil barbs but im not sure about having the room.

Did you cycle the tank first?

By those measurements, it sounds like may be around 75 gallons.

The tanks a 72 Gallon. If the tank wasn't cycled before you put the Gourami's in then I doubt the other one will make it either. As for the Bala's and Tin foils I wouldn't add them until the tank cycles. Are you testing anything other than pH?

Gouramis are actually pretty hardy, so I wouldn't assume he or she couldn't live through a cycle. You would probably be better off with danios or black tetras if you plan on doing a fish-in cycle, but gouramis (especially three spot) could likely live through it.

would i be able to fit tinfoils or bala sharks if so how many can i comfortably fit. also i liked blue lobster etc... i saw them on a web page. would they be able to thrive in my tank? are they good for cleaning? yes i understand that it is my responsibility to clean and keep clean.

You should be able to fit those no problem. Only I would suggest picking up a good book and learning everything you can about the different fish you plan to keep so that you can give them the best environment possible.

Cycle?

I'm sorry for jumping in with my own question here but what exactly does cycling mean? I've had my 20 gal. tank for only a couple of months and haven't done this. My fish are healthy (except for a new odd growth on the lip of a guppy) so I've probably blundered through it unknowingly. I only test for ph...and come to think of it I haven't done that in about a month and a half! I assume it has something to do with testing for nitrate levels from reading this thread. :duh:

i am not positive my self, but i beleive it is a time to setup a tank then slowly add certain fish or chemicals or plants to condition water or allow for good bacteria to grow... try posting yor own new thread for real results.
