I have a 50 gallon acrilic tank that has no top, it is a strange shape and would not be able to buy a top for it. My plecostomus climbed up the wall eating and right out onto the floor which I didn't find until too late. Should I just keep the water lower from the top or get another type of algae eater that wont end up the same way.

he climbed out? i highly doubt it. it may of jumped. are there any predators in the tank?

If you like the pleco and that's the fish you prefer, and you're not planning on putting a top of the tank, definitely keep the water level a bit lower. Plecos have been known to "climb" out of the tank for two reasons.....bad water quality, and they get carried away with their algae eating.

Have seen many plecos jumping out of tanks in my yrs in f/w, mostly during night. Perhaps spooked by vibrations/other factors from time to time?

Exactly my thoughts. I know mine can dart across a tank very quickly so they would easily be able to jump out. I just can't imagine a pleco sucking it's way up the dry glass wall and over :) haha

Maybe a wire mesh cover like they type used on Critter Cages? I know that mine will crash into the lid especially at night. When he does that you can hear it all over the house!

With an open top you stand a risk of any fish making the great escape.

a sheet of plexiglass can be cut to any size/dimension you want. i would highly suggest putting a lid on that tank, regardless of the type of fish kept in it.

Another idea is plastic wrap. Clear tape the sides down. I'm actually using it on 2 of my tanks til I can afford a proper top. I can lift a corner to feed. Helps with evaporation too.

Haydn....they can and they do, trust me on this one. Many times the only escape opening is an area around the filter. Some people have found them dried up on top of the glass tank top so we assume then that they sucked their way into the filter outflow and couldn't ride the wave back in successfully.
