Hey folks. I was hoping y'all could look over a rough schematic I put together of what I'm thinking of in terms of plumbing and fuge design for a new tank.

:read: Main tank will probably be a 75 gallon (maybe 90, but probably 75) with a 29g sump/fuge in the cabinet underneath the main tank. I was planning on using either a Quietflow 600 overflow or a Lifereef -- it looks like those have the U-tube designs that won't lose siphon. This will be my first sw tank and first stab at "serious" plumbing like this. I was probably going to use flexible tubing as much as possible, but I may not be able to do that, particularly on the return. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Main tank will have liverock, but unsure of whether there will be coral.)

I just built a 90 gallon and just about to start cycling it. Here is what i did:

In the tank I have one Overflow box with a 1-1/2 bulkhead. Return is mag drive 950 3/4" bulkhead. You can see i split the water coming down in 2 and had it go into my 10 gallon refug on the right and had the other go to my 20 gallon long to the protein skimmer side (skimmer not in pic yet). The both flow to the other side of the 20 gallon long and that is where the return pump is and it goes back up. This is simple design and i like it so far because i have lots of room for stuff in my sump and i have a good size refugium.

Hope this helps

Well, i dont see any issues with the way you have that set out.. Basically exactly how i am doing the plumbing on my new tank..

The only thing i would possibly change is to remove the ball valve from the inlet as i dont think it is required and remove the valve from the spout that goes back to the sump from the return area..If you scan through my tank designs etc in the DIY section, you will notice that i put in the ball valves the same as you, but, after sitting down thinking about it and discussing on here, i decided to leave them out and just have one on the return line it self, purely just for a cut off measure...

LIke i say, looks like a good starting design you have there...

Thanks Niko. I'll go into the DIY area and look at your thread. How did you wind up regulating the flow on the return spout (or did you just remove that entirely)? As for the media, I just want to have that area there in case I need to put some charcoal or something in for some reason. Generally, I'll probably keep it empty (so the natural filtration builds up) or just put some foam there.

Ok, i understand about the media.....

The pumps that you buy generally have the ability to regulate the flow..

For example, the pump i am buying will allow from 2100 litres per hour up to 3000 litres per hour. The only reason i leaving a ball valve on the return pipe itself is just in case i have a problem. I know my diagram in the DIY section shows more, but others wont be used...
