Poll: Melafix

I've posted on a couple of forums regarding the effectiveness of Melafix in repairing torn or injured fins. I have two ballon mollies whose dorsal sailfins were damaged by an aggressive gourami. I'm wondering:
Has Melafix worked for you?
Are there any other remedies you recommend?
Will the fins grow back completely?

Not really, but I like the smell and it doesn't seem to hurt.

Fresh water and lots of it. If rot or columnaris develops, use an anti-bacterial med. This kinda thing usually heals on its own.

So long as there is no damage to the base of the fin (where it joins with the back), yes, it should.

I have had it work 100% on flesh wounds on the fish, not a frequent occurance but has happened. I would definitely try for the injured fins.

if you have a bacterial issue--go with meds.

if you have torn or damaged fins water change, water change.

i like the way Melafix smells--lol.
 
You can just use straight tea tree oil too, make sure it's pure. 1 drop per every 2 gallons of tank water. Melafix is just watered down tea tree oil.
I had some fin rot problems and use Maracyn to cure it and tea tree oil for fin growth and it worked great!!
 
In the past I woudl have said yeah tot Melafix. My betta was always looking bad, but would perk up after a round of Melafix. But since i have done larger water changes and kept the tank at a higher temp things have been great.

I also agree that Melafix probably doesn't hurt when used in the right dosage. And soemtimes it is really hard to not add something, if for no other reason than to make you feel better. So if you like it use it.
 
I have experienced melafix working on one of my gouramis. You MUST remove the carbon from your filter, and it takes quite awhile to see results, but I think it works faster than just waiting it out.
 
Melafix does not work...Here is an excerpt from a famous koi vet, Dr. Johnson:

"Melafix is promoted to have antibacterial properties but our research has shown this is not the case. We treated an inhabited system for five consecutive days and then ran CFU (colony forming unit) tests on the water and found a typical population of Aeromonas hydrophila/caviae, and Citrobacter freundii, as well as Serratia spp."

"MelaFix is NOT bactericidal as claimed."

and you can get tea tree oil from...local grocery store? =b
