I know you can use regular old polyester fill from walmart, but my concern is which ones. I know I read about being careful not to get the ones that have been treated with chemicals for things like flammability.

Today I got a 1lb bag of the stuff from walmart for like $2. The only thing is says on it is that it "meets the flammability requirements of California Burea of Home Furnishing technical bullet 117. Care should be exercises near open flame or with burning cigarettes"

Think this stuff is safe for my tank?

On a similar note...
How much should I be using / how often replace it? Is it like with the sponge (rinse out periodically but use until basically falls apart) or should it be changed more regularly?

1. Yes it is safe, the meets flammability requirements thing just means it will melt and not burn.

2. Filter pads are polyester too, so you should rinse it out with tank water and use it until it falls apart.

I tend to toss it and replace when its clogged as its kind of hard to rinse and so cheap that why not as its secondary media.

yea that's what I figured. This bag will probably last me....I have no idea how long so....lol. Replacing even on a weekly or biweekly basis, it would probably last a good long time.

thanks :grinyes:

I use the same stuff on all three of my tanks. I just replace it when it looks dirty.

I just stuff mine in the little media bags you can buy at any LFS, works great keeps the polyfil in the filter. I replace mine every week when I do my PWC.

I also use it in my canister (HOT Magnum) and seems to work better than any other medium. No I don't rinse and re-use. The cost of it is way too low to warrant re-use vs effort needed to do so.
