This hobby has turned me into a horrible person!

I've started breeding guppies, and realized that I would need to cull the ones I don't want, or I'll be overrun with them, so I decided to buy something to eat them. I came home from the pet shop with 2 piranha :shark:. As I don't have enough guppies to keep them fed, I also got a dozen feeder goldfish. Now I feel horribly guilty as I look at the poor half-eaten little fishies, still swimming around without their tails! I don't know how I'll manage when I have to feed guppies to them.

I don't know if I can deal with the guilt!

I understand. That is why I try to stay away from fish that overbreed.
I love my convict fish but I will not partner him for fear of ending up in the same situation.
I even feel guilty and sorry when I pass the feeder tank at my LFS.

Feeder goldfish are like McDonald's hamburgers for fish - fatty, full of antibiotics and lacking in vitamins. I'd get your pirhanna eating flakes (yep, they'll eat flakes), pellets, and frozen foods, then give them the culled guppies as treats. I work at a LFS. We feed our pirhanna lots of dried, freeze-dried and frozen foods, very seldom anything live, and they grow like weeds.

if you want something that eats fish get rid of the prianahs and get some oscars way nicer

Thanks

Thanks for the advice, guys!

Blinky - I think I'll go with your solution, and feed them flakes most of the time.

I don't mind the fact that the fish get eaten - it's the way that they get eaten alive, bit by bit, that bothers me!

I'll try keeping the live fish as more of a treat! :dance2:
