Hey all,

I have a 4 month old female gold dust molly with what appears to be popeye on one of her eyes.

Does anyone know if Melafix will cure it? Is it harmful to the rest of the aquarium; I do have a 5g I could quarantine her in.

Thanks

Popeye is often an internal bacterial infection--poor water conditions is cited as one cause. If this is the case, the other fish won't catch it from the infected fish, but will be susceptible to ailments. Last water test results?

I'd suspect you need to start doing larger/more frequent water changes. The high nitrates indicates a build up of other toxins--ones that can't be tested for by hobbyists, and that's likely a big part of the problem.

re: Melafix. I do not use it. I do not recommend others use it. There are antibiotics that can and should be used for specific problems. The 'herbal' remedies, IMO and IME, are not effective against serious problems. At best, it's a placebo.

Okay Il get on the nitrate problems, but what about curing the popeye? If melafix is no good, do you know of any other medications? I did read that peniciilin or amoxiciilin can cure it, but I have no idea how I could obtain it unless its a main ingredient in a common med-im just cautious about buying anything or putting anything into my tank unless I know its safe

whats a placebo??lol

There are a number of meds for fish tanks. Read ingredients--they'll specify which they contain.
A placebo is something which is given as medication, but any perceived improvement is based on your desire to see it work rather than any effect of the medication. It's like kissing a kids boo-boo, in other words. Doesn't make the injury any better, but it might make him 'feel' better.
