Porcupine Puffer

Thanks all! They are all juvenile right now and we are in the process of designing a tank that will be in one of our walls. We are hoping to make it 500 gallons, but we will see. I plan to move these fish into that tank when it is built and before they outgrow this tank. Thanks for all the tips. I will head to the grocery store today.

A 500 gallon tank would be a phenomenal in-wall display tank. I'll be expecting photos of the entire process! :p:

forgive me im not a saltwater owner yet but dont puffers eat snails???? is there even a sw snail????? once agian forgive me!!

i also have a selection of puffers & THEY EAT ROSEU REDS JUST FINE. & FEEDER GUPPIES. JUST DONT GIVE THEM GOLD FISH,THE HEAD IS TO BIG TO DIGEST GOOD.& THEY LOVE SHRIMP. THAT GETS EXSPENSIVE.WHEN U HAVE 40 PLUS FISH & THEY LIKE TO EAT

It is a predator tank, as stated in the first post. A SW predator tank means no corals, no inverts, no small community fish. Puffers will eat snails and crabs, actually, they have to eat crustations to grind their front tooth down. If they don't, the tooth will get so big it will cause the fish not to be able to open its mouth wide enough to eat. Regular feeding of krill, squid, clams, and teeth filing hard-shell shrimp is suggested to help keep the puffer's teeth groomed. When I had a porcupine puffer I would usually buy about 10 snails a month for the puffer to eat. That is the reality of a predator tank.. there will be death involved.

While it is true that it is not good to feed the puffer FW feeders, that doesn't mean don't do it at all. If that is what is required to get it to eat in the short term while you ween it off to other foods I would still do it. Just do it sparingly, use something like a molly fry or guppies. I wouldn't do it for more than a month and I would do one small live FW feeder then use a feeding stick with fresh seafood to see if you can ween it to other foods.

OK, so I took all of your advice. I tried clams and shrimp, no luck although my trigger and wrass were in heaven. I finally gave in and gave him 3 minows. Well, it's been three days since that and I tried the silversides on a feedind stick. He bites at them, but its as if they are too tough or something. He is showing interest and trying, but once he bites he loses interest. I even tried stuffing them with garlic scented algae. Same result, very interest, but just won't chew. Any more advice would be great. I feel that I have made progress but geez!!!!!!!!
