I have a pair of Texas around 5-6" in length. For the past week they've been 'rubbing' themselves against things. I've been watching carefully for parasites or something, but nothing is visible...assuming there is reason for it. There are other fish in the tank, and they've begun this strange behavior now as well. The chineese algae eater looks pretty funny doing this. Anyway, they're all in a 55gal tank, and the water parameters are good. I'm just curious if anyone has seen this before? Or if it's a sign of something to come? Maybe ich, before it's really visible? Any help or thoughts are much appreciated. :)

I am just getting thru a case of ich. I lost 2 of 3 pictus cats, on which the white spots were clearly visable. A few days after I started medicating (with salt) one of my juruparis (check spelling) started to display the same behavior you described. I looked him over carefully and didn't see any spots at first. As I took an even closer look, I thought I saw some very faint spots. Maybe I was imagining it for some reason, but either way the spots were not as severe as on my 3 pictus. 2 days later he also died. I can only assume it was ich. Proir to the jurupari death, I also notice him nipping at the cats. Maybe he ingested some ich parasites, which then attacked him from the inside. I don't want to give you any wrong advice, but IMO it could possibly, maybe, perhaps, sort of, almost, kinda be a case of ich.

Another thing I don't understand about my outbreak is that none of my other fish showed any signs whatsoever; 4 tiger barbs, 2 tetras, 3 painted glass fish,3 firemouths, 4 synodontis cats, 2 butterfly loaches, 2 rams and 1 other jurupari in 100 gallon.
Good luck, I hope it works out well.

Sorry to hear about your battle with ich. I've heard that by the time its visible...it's too late. I've been keeping a very close eye on the fish, so far so good. I haven't witnessed any 'rubbing' going on today. But the female has been shaking a little. Almost like a small seizure. I think I read in another post that this is generally a mating ritual. But they just spawned maybe two weeks ago, seems a little soon? Who knows...maybe I have a few different things going on all at once. I guess I've been pretty fortunate, I've never had much problems with fish until recently...but then again, I'm not even positive they're having a problem. I'm probably just paranoid. Thanks for your input meangene.
