potential betta gill problem, or maybe im just paranoid..

Yesterday, I got a male crowntail betta, and ive noticed that his gills dont seem to be laying as close to his body as they should. They are sticking out a bit more than what seems normal. They aren't discolored, i think, because his gills as of now are black with an orange stripe on both sides when flared. He seems pretty active for a newbie, and he is eating bloodworms, since thats all he will eat. He basically seems like a normal fish with no external issues except for the gills and occasional heavy breathing.

As of now he's in a 1.75 gal for a quarantine, with 75 deg water. ammonia and nitrates should be none right now because its new treated dechlorinated water. I have some salt in there for him just as a precaution, so is there anything else i should do/ watch out for?

Do you have a pic(s)? From what you are describing he could be perfectly healthy or little sick, what you are describing makes it very difficult to diagnose without a pic(s).

I just realized this post sounds kinda rude. That is certainly not the intention. I think it is just the wording. Unfortunately I can't think of a way to reword it.

I hope he gets better if he is sick. :)

Unfortunately the pics don't seem to be showing up. Try clicking "go advanced" and then clicking the paper clip. You should be able to upload from their.

I think hes fine. Ive got a blackskirt tetra with no skin ovr his gills, so if hes fine, than your bettas fine.
