I'd still be leary, the crab may not actively hunt the puffers, but as they seem to be heavy sleepers if he stumbles upon them at night it would be too good of an opportunity for the crab to pass up IMO..
On a side note, I went to the lfs the other day and watched a feeder goldfish taunt some red crayfish (lobsters?) for about 15 mins, he would swim just out of claw range and kind of wiggle his tail tantalizingly towards the crayfish. He had 3 of them doing laps around the tank trying to catch him...funny little show
