power back up for filter & heaters?????

Just bought a battery operated air pump for when power goes out. Was wondering if there is anything like that or any options for adding a back up to my FX5 Filter and 2 300 watt heaters? Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the only thing I can think of is surge protectors for computers that have battery backups. These are not a long term solution but only a fix for a few hours (6-8 at most). Here are some on tiger direct:

Other than that, I think a generator is pretty much your only option.

Some wire and some magnets and you could make a hand-cranked generator .

You could possibly rig up a dc to ac inverter to run some things off in an emergency. We use this in our bobhouse and it works ok using a deep cycle marine battery. The inverter hooks right onto the battery with little clamps.

Just to put my two cents in.Blisskr's right.Marine or truck is great.But hows this for another idea! plum an solar pool heater into your system as well. less work fore your heater = Less $$$ spent on bills.It doesn't seem mush of a saving at first but in one year its heaps ( keep your heater/s going though! solar don't work at night)Sorry guys just one more idea.run a clear pipe about 10 cm between your black tube.uv is great and its easy to inspect from a ladder or so.

o thanks for reminding me... you can get a few car batteries and use the same inverter trick... you can also charge the batteries with a car battery charger... since my dad is a mechanic we have one around the house... it also works as a welder... no, I;m kidding about welding... but it does work

Battery backup - UPS - I have an APC backups 900 powering my fluval 405, it is good for 4~6 hours before it dies... a 300watt heater plugged into it would drain it in under 30 minutes... i.e. pretty much you need generator or solar power to keep it running without comercial power for a long period of time.

My UPS covers me for my occasional few hour power outage, which happens a couple of times a year where I live.

300 watt heaters may be 300 watt, but the heater isnt using 300 watts consistantly,the heaters turn on and off to maintain temp unless for some reason your tank is cooling just as fast as your are heating. if it was like that, peoples electrical bills would be through the roof. a UPS would be your best bet, a heather is kind of non-essential in a temporary blackout, the fish will acclimate with the change in temp and should be ok till the power returns. after that 8 hour window, if you dont have power then your filter goes and well, dead in the water you are.
