power head filters vs. hanging side filters

hi... im currently running a UGF... i have a side hanging power filter (aqua clear 20) also...

what is the difference between a power head filters vs. hanging side filters?
*im new to this, sorry if i sound dumb)... or are they the same thing?

is there any filters that i can attach to one of the extra lift tube holes (currently the spares are capped) to suck up the crap underneath the plastic UGF?

help please :thud:
 
one more thing...

what is a RUGF? how can i get those? is there suppose to be a reverse switch to the airpump??

those hanging side filters (powerfilters) suck water from the tank and through their media and lets it overflow back into the tank. they work a little better because they have a lot more room and you can put other types of media in them. im assuming the powerhead filter you are talking about is just the powerhead with a sponge attached, those are fine its just the sponges are usually a lot smaller and only a few will be able to work with chemical filtration.

the rugf is the reverse undergravel filter. those work well because instead of sucking the junk under the ugf plates they push water out of them so you will still be getting your biofiltration and then you can vaccumn out everything or use a powerfilter to suck everything up. those are powered by powerheads that have the reverse option. you can try and rig something up so you have a powerfilters intake tube down into the ugf plates just use the extra tubes and maybe some additional hose from the hardware store and you should be able to get something that will work.
 
Just remember that with a UGF all the tubes are suposed to have the same draw of water. If you put a power head on one and keep the others open or just ahve the air line draw on the others all you will do is suck water from the other tubes rather than through your gravel. Same goes with the RUGF, you need to cap off the tubes or have multiple power heads.
