Pregnancy and the Flu...

From my sis:
I will definitely ask the doc and then do some research, cuz i think i remember someone at work saying that the sudafed was good - but after reading that post... research is the way to go! Your friends at AC are so nice to offer their advice and experiences...thank them all for me :oD

No..... the Doll is not Pregnant, LMAO!

ok, so here's the deal. My sister is pregnant, about 4 months or so at this point and has come down with the Flu..... or a great imposter of it. She has a doctor appointment for this afternoon for some prenatal stuff but she also wants to talk to the doc about this nasty cold and if there's anything she could safely take. This concerns me, I guess is a trust issue because I know of someone who took pills at the doctors advice during pregnancy and it had ill effects on the newborn. The doctor denies it but this was 30-40 years ago so medicine was a lot different back then. I'm nervous about her taking the advice of a doc without getting some outside opinions/experience. So..... am I just being paranoid? Can anyone say if they've taken anything that's been good enough for the flu and safe enough for the baby?

Pass this link on to your sister: http://www.motherisk.org/ It's a website specifically to inform women about drug safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding (with detailed studies on various drugs.) It's got very balanced information and lists a number of drugs that are apparently safe to take. There are also phone numbers to contact for more info. They are based in Toronto...not sure if there is a similar program in the US, but you could email them to find out if they know of one.

I had a cold while pregnant....a few years ago to be sure...but was told by my OB to take Sudafed.
Chicken soup and lots of fluids are the best!!

The formula story is this. 32 years ago a good friend of the family had a baby in Arizona. In this town they made available a new baby formula on the market and all the pediatrician were given coupons to get this new formula basically for so cheap it was almost free. It was a test area market research thing put out by the formula manufacterers. All the new moms were giving this formula to their babies. Turns out the formula was so lacking in vital nutrients that nearly EVERY baby suffered severe mental retardation caused by it. Carolyns son was born a gorgeous healthy baby boy and by the time he was two was severly handicapped. Of course lawsuits were filed and won, and each family recieved less than $20,000. This is still a very well known company and primary maker of baby formulas but they were trying to market a low cost formula and chose a test town. Poor Christopher is a gorgeous young man who is unable to live on his own, has a job but his mom or aide must go to work with him to help him (Burger King is WONDERFUL about hiring mentally challenged employees). The money they won in the law suit wasn't even enough to pay the medical bills that had been charged to get him past the first few years of his life. It is a tragedy beyond all measure to me. There was a total of over 100 babies that were affected by this....many of them died due to poor health issues.
I know that the FDA keeps close control over formula manufacters but it wasn't a risk I was willing to take and nursing my children was an amazing experience for me. I know it's not for everyone but with this experience scaring the crap out of me all my life I felt I had no other choice.

whoa...... that's scarey, mk.... I do know she is planning on breastfeeding.... at least in the earlier months but I will send this along.

I just heard from her... the OB said something about her using Claritan.... I told her to surf about it.

So what was the brand of formula?!!? What an awful thing to have happen

I read a post a while back here at the GC forum.....that mentioned something about adverse effects when using sudafed....but I can't remember which organ it had the effect on......I know tylenol can severly damage your liver if taken too often...I just don't think they warn about some of these adverse effects often or severly enough !

Caution always when taking ANYTHING during pregnancy.....the Drs said that thalydamide was ok to use for morning sickness...till they found out differently !!

I remember that thread too, Emg.... but I'm not sure it was in regards to pregnancy. I do agree though that especially with a pregnancy, caution should be used before taking anything... the whole "doctor says it's ok when it really isn't is what I was worried about.... glad I'm being safer than sorry...
I figured, why not ask here as well.. ;)
