How can i tell if my yellow molly is pregnant? About a week ago, I found about 10 fry in my tank, but all were eaten. My molly looks very fat now, and has an odd dark spot on her lower belly. By the way, how can I tell if my fish is a male or female?

If your mollie is pregnant she should have a dark gravid patch, just to the rear of her belly and will eventually look fatter. However, they can look fatter for a number of other reasons, too, for example constipation, so you can't rely purely on their size.

The males will have a quite visible "gonopod" on their underside. Obviously, the females won't. (A bit like humans really!!!! - without trying to get too graphic.)

Unfortunately, the fry will get eaten, unless you transfer the female to a breeding tank in order to raise the fry.

I can give you more help with this if you want (just ask), but if you are a newcomer, it may be best to get used to normal aquarium husbandry first!!

Hope this helps.

Another way to protect some fry without trying to figure too much about pregnancy issues is to have lots of plants, particulalry floating plants like water sprite. This gives the fry lots of hiding places so some are bound to survive.

It is generally another month beofre they give birth again though sometiems they can give birth to some fry and hold on to some for a week or so.

Thanks for the help. I noticed the dark spot on my molly. She could very well be pregnant. I'll be including a photo soon to help anyone determine whether she is pregnant or not. Thanks again!
