Theoretically, can you pressurize tanks to simulate extreme depths of the ocean?

This is just something a friend and I have been wondering. lol.

Possible, sure... doable for the normal person at home, I highly doubt it. Plus what would you ever put in the tank since the stuff that would go in it is in the ocean and bringing them to the surface unpressurized would more than likely kill them.

like I said...THEORETICALLY lol. For instance...what if you wanted to keep deep sea fish that are used to extreme pressures? I'm not interested in attempting it, nor do I have the funds, but I was just wondering how someone would go about it.

Theoretically it would be possible to design a pressure vessel that would maintain the appropriate pressure, the plumbing for water changes, feeding, etc. would be an absolute pain, not to mention maintenance of oxygen and other levels. I have no idea how a nitrogen cycle would be impacted as well. Of course to truly replicate deep sea environments, you'd also be looking at keeping things at an incredibly cold temperature so you'd be running a chiller almost constantly.
I don't know that anyone has done it, or if the parts are actually available, but you were talking theoretically. There may be a large public aquarium somewhere that's built one.

If you had a room that you could pressurize, wouldn't you be able to set up a normal aquarium inside that room?

but how do you go into the room without a bunch of gear on (oxygen mask, etc) to do tank maintenance? you can't exactly just flip a switch and make the room unpressurized long enough to do water changes, etc, that'd most likely kill the fish.

in theory, yes, it would work. in real life and in practicality, nope.

you know all those deep sea organisms that look like alien lifeforms? wouldn't it be cool to have them in a home aquarium? That's where the thought to start this thread came from.

Heck, we wouldn't have to spend much money on lighting! hahaha

Theoretically you can pressurize a sealed tank, and can bring something up from the bottom of the ocean, but you would never be able to do good water changes because you would need water from the bottom of the ocean, to make sure they were happy. Also you would need to clean the tank, which would require depressurizing it.
