my wife and i have been working on this tank. while we read a couple books about fish, barely any mention is made of what type plants are best, or most suited for certain tanks, lights or fish.

we have taken a couple plants home, only to kill them. this does not appeal to us.

can someone please direct us to a list of plants that are best suited for 75 gallon frsehwater with 260 watt coralife florescent bulbs.

how would you rate the light i get from a coralife lamp with four 65watt bulbs? high? moderate high? sorry i don't know how it is determined.

i am still very new at this but this appears to be the 'rule of thumb'
260watts/75gallons=3.4666 wats per gallon
that would be high light...

Your light puts you in the higher light range & you may have algae problems without adding CO2. You may get by with Excel dosing but I'll let someone else address that, I'm strictly a low/med light person.

That's a lot of light for not having CO2...algae could become a problem. I've also got 260w over my 75g, but since I don't inject CO2, I only run the front bank of lamps. Once I take the plunge into CO2 injection, I plan to fire up the back lights as well.

I would agree that w/o Co2 you're going to run into algae problems with that lighting. Dosing excel with that large of tank would make it difficult to keep carbon levels at a good level. If you really want to keep that lighting I would suggest going with pressurized Co2 and heavier nutrient dosing.

jpappy789, the light was suggested by the freshwater expert at my LFS who knew we wanted a live plant tank. no mention of co2 was ever made. or that they light was so strong it could create algae issues.

ok then it might not be too bad but there are a lot of non aquatic plants out there even at lfs. good idea to start reading up on plants so you learn what works and what doesnt. i would only run half the lighting until you get co2. though you might not want co2 and ferts.
