I've done freshwater tanks for many years. I have 3 currently up and running. I would like to venture into saltwater this year. I've been doing a lot of research and reading and asking questions of folks I know who have saltwater tanks. I was also recenty given a 29 gallon tank and stand, so that is what I am going to use. Hey, can you argue with free? :) I am going to go with a FOWLR. Now for the dumb question (and this is just curiosity, really, because I'll find out eventually)-

When I go the the LFS to get the live rock, how do they pack it for transport home? And, since it is really cold here in NH this time of year, should I bring along a cooler or something like that to insulate it on the way home so it doesn't get too cold? The place I plan to get the rock at is a bit of a drive from me, but I've bought stuff from them for a long time, and they have never steered me wrong. Thanks for answering my dumb question!
 
theyll probably just double bag it dry, you should expect some die off anyways, its not a big deal, once its in your car it should be warm anyways right? dont fret too much, if its already cured in thier tanks it shouldnt die off too much depending on how long transport is going to take.
 
when i get LR from my LFS its packed 1 of 2 ways

first way is double bagged with some water(like a fish). The other store uses Styrofoam boxes and some wet newspaper. If you think about it unless you put the rock in the trunk your gonna have heat(i hope) so the rock should be fine

Seen is both ways as well. When LFS's get theirs it is usually wrapped in wet newspaper. Get your self some test kits to gauge your cycle. If you get really well cured LR, you might not notice much of cycle but test anyway to be sure.
 
I have the test kits. Well, they are on the way. And as soon as one friend gets into her stash of extra "stuff" and lets me know what she can spare, I can start putting it together. So far, I have the tank and stand, light, heater, a small hang on filter, and substrate sand. Test kits and powerhead on the way. Will pick up salt mix next. Then I can start putting this thing together. I think it's going to be fun!
 
your going to love it, i started out fw and now i only have a 55 reef im working on i combined my 40 reef n my 30 sw and made them one. i used all my rock n corals and now i have room for more small fish and my corrals wont suffer from the bio load. so far so good but im having a little nitrate spike n doin waterchages to compansate. i think its from all the biomatter in the two sand beds bein stirred all up so a couple more waterchanges n filtercleanings n i should be aight....i hope..lol. good luck ur gona love it!
