I'm having a problem with drain flies. The tank is relatively new - 40 gallon. Fish in tank are panda cory; sword tails; kuhli loaches; bristolenose pleco. There are a few plants (live). The filter is an aquaclear 70.

I've seen a few larva swimming in the tank like little tadpols but while the fishes will happily eat sword fries they don't seem to go after these. I've filled the tank fairly high and place s. wrap around the small opening in the back in hope of drowing most of the adults but I'm not having much luck. I did try cleaning out the filter in case that was the source of spawning but that didn't seem much to help (I rinsed it in tank water which I then disposed of - but didn't want to risk destroying the bacteria on the filter via anything harsher).

I've never had this problem before and I can't seem to find a way to erradicate the problem (which has been on going now for about 7 days).

Manually remove as many as you can, kill any adults, and clean the lip of the tank really well. Check your drains, that's the likely source and you will need to bleach them for a few days to kill them off. Very few fish will eat the larvae.

I've not seen them in either the kitchen or bathroom - only in the room with the aquarium. Pity I can't bleach the tank or have the fish eat the larvae. Hum. I will clean the underside of the lid daily for the next couple of weeks and see if that helps.
