Protein skimmers for freshwater?

I just ordered an eheim surface extractor the other day - my planted aquarium had very little current and the surface was covered in film. In the mean time I put a powerhead in and placed it a couple inches below the surface so that it adds movement to the surface - nothing major just a slight movement - no film at all. I am hoping the surface extractor will give the same results.

I have a Fluval/Hagen/Aquaclear (they're all the same no matter what label) surface skimming attachment that goes on pretty much all of my canisters and of course my ACs. It cost me around twelve dollars and I install it any time the film builds up. In a day or two all is clear and I go back to the normal inlet. Cheap, effective and non-permanent solution to the problem with very limited impact on the CO2 levels of my planted tanks.

Thanks, I have a Fluval canister so this will probably be an easy solution.
