Purchasing a canister filter

I have always used Magnums and love them so that would be my first choice. You can't really go wrong with any that you listed though. If you do get a Magnum make sure to get the double valves for it. They are optional, which is my only real beef with them, but they make filter cleaning a breeze.

These threads are always amusing. Everyone has their favorite.

Personally I think that you should got to a pet store or two that carries those filters. Open up the box, take a look at all the little pieces and read the directions. Buy the one that you believe you understand how it all fits together and will be the easiest to maintain. When I bought my first canister, I did this and when the clerk came by and raised an eyebrow I just pointed at the price of buggers. I then went home and bought it cheaper online... ;)

Or if you are on a tight budget like me you'll lean towards the least expensive one.

Eheim, Rena, or Marineland C series cant go wrong with any of the three. Get something rated for at least a 60 gallon + tank.

So that was you... Really, I understand about tight budgets but cheaper initially is rarely cheaper in the long run.

That's a good saying but rarely applies to this hobby for instance the best filter hands down is a sponge filter extremely versatile and cheap.

The thing with filters it really comes down to personal choice they all work!

I would call 1.800.322.1266 for Marineland they are very helpful and will get your filter running even if they have to send you another one free of charge.

I would do this even if you get a canister never hurts to have a second filter.

Good point about the sponge filters. I was really talking about electrical/mechanical things. Anytime I've bought cheap, or most any time, I've regretted it later on. Anytime I've bought quality it has paid off by lasting longer, working better or both.

My choices would be in this order
Marineland 350
Fluval 205
Rena XP
