When I bought the ammonia (Safeway brand), I read the ingredients and they were: water and ammonium hydroxide (also says, contains no phosphorus). I thought, perfect, it's pure ammonia, so I bought it without shaking it. Now I just shook it as I was getting ready to add it to my tank, and it bubbles on top. I don't know if I'd call it a soapy foam, but there are bubbles. Now, would this just be a reaction from a liquid being shook, or no? I can't smell anything but pure ammonia  , but I'm unsure about using it. I wouldn't think there would be hidden ingredients, but I want to be sure.

I think they have to list all the ingredients, but I'm not sure. Anyway, if it's not suddy, I wouldn't worry about it. Pure water bubbles when you shake it :).

If it has detergent in it, the bubbles will last a long time. The unadulterated ammonia will foam a bit, but the bubble dissipate quite rapidly.

Jim
