PVC overflow

Well, to each his own. Now that I am putting together my first drilled tank I dont think I would want to go this route again. Drilled tank are for the most part permanent, and if you have one of the big glass overflow chambers they take up a rather large amount of tank space. I didnt knowabout the diy PVC unit or else I'd have dont that. I'd amagine most of your complaints could have been addressed though, and I'm not really sure what advantage a HOB unit has over a pvc one other than it isnt as visible in the tank.

Has anyone put a top on a PVC overflow like a durso standpipe? Like an inverted U with a small hole drilled in the top? I dont see why it wouldnt work and that would probably eliminate most of the noise issue.

If you're going to do the DIY overflow I'd put an intake on it like this:

I didn't know of this when I did mine years n years ago. I used an industrial drain (1" to like 4" flange meant for drains) This is how my drains work on my 180 that are drilled but the same intake would work for an PVC overflow.

It's extremely quiet and the red block is where a hard 1/4" pipe sticks up. It's a vent.

very quiet.
