Going to be gluing my plumbing together this weekend for my drain and return. Just wondering if the glue I got is the right stuff.. I notice in alot of pics that the glued joints are purple on most peoples PVC. The can of glue I got says its for PVC but it says its medium grey.. Is this ok to use? Or did I get the wrong stuff?

Shane.

The glue comes in different colors. Blue, purple, clear, grey, etc. If your not using something like "Red Hot" glue, meaning glue with a primer that dries super fast, it is a good idea to buy and use some primer before using the grey glue. The primer comes in a similar type of can/bottle. It cleans the PVC and softens it so the glue makes a better seal. Nothing worse than gluing the PVC together and getting small leaks which makes you break it all apart and buy new pieces.

Always use more glue than you would think on both sides, but be careful of drips, especially on carpet. ;) Also, make sure when you put the pieces together to give it a 1/4 turn, this really makes a big difference. If you want a nice clean line on the joints you can put some blue painters tape on the PVC about 1/4" from the joint (went pressed all the way together) and then after you glue it pull the tape off right away to leave a clean line.

Ok thanks everyone, I will hit HD and get some primer as well.. Dont want any leaks..

Shane.

The grey PVC glue is primarily used for gluing electrical pvc conduit, I think. For schedule 40 pvc I've always used purple primer and clear or blue glue.

As long as it says it is safe for drinking water use, that PVC glue should be fine. I'd also suggest using a primer.

The purple primer is for the building inspector.
PVC primer used to all be clear and the building inspector couldn't tell if it had been used or not. Joints hold better when the parts have been primed.

If you spend time in the home improvement aisles, you will have noticed that 12/2 "Romex" wire now has a yellow sheath. Again, that's for the building inspector. 14 gauge and not allowed at all in some states and only limited use in some. Being white, it sticks out.
