Quality cat food thread

I'm a dog person..but the same people make food for both..usually. I feed my dogs Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers Soul...and find it to be a quality food. I switched from Eukanuba...and before that it was IAMS. I found it to be better than both.
You know Nursie, its also pretty good, with milk and sugar in the mornings.

The link I gave you to the Wellness web site, not WCJ. I dunno what the Whole Cat Journal link is -- couldn't find it....

Yes i know - i looked up the WCJ website and as i said i couldn't find any articles on their page about food.

Either way i'd like to thank everyone for the input. Wheew - lots of information. Who would've thought things could be so difficult and controversial - WELL... ok i admit i did anticipate it. After all why should it be any different than "fish problems" ;).

Well i did believe it'd be ok to buy the "decent" food (not the cheap stuff) from the grocery store. WRONG AGAIN.... so now i have to figure out where to find the "good stuff" somewhat affordable.

While we're at it - do we need to buy any special kind of cat litter ? lol

chicken soup has a store locator on their website.

and i just use the cheapest cat litter i can find, lol. why pay tons of money for something your cat is going to crap in and that is going to be thrown away.

Oh what i totally forgot to ask (and i have received/ read conflicting information about this aswell) - how much dry food do you/ should you feed your cat a day ?
And if i added some canned food to his diet - would it be ok for him to have a whole can ? If so... once a week ? Twice ?
Keep in mind he is
a) a bit on the round side
b) always begging for food

EDIT: I thought i'd add a pic just for the fun of it.

We use a litter called Swheat scoop. It's made of wheat, chemical and clay free, unscented, has no dust like most litters, it's flushable, biodegradable, compostable, and is so safe your cat can eat it!

The bonus is you can buy it at Petsmart/Petco. And it looks like regular litter, so no mixing to get your cat acclimated.

Dog food???

Okay, Dog Food Question, please: I have a boxer/black lab mix. He's a whopping 100 or so pounds at 14 months. Raised him from 6 weeks (he came home unbeknownst to anyone with parvo and survived--8 siblings put down) . I've been feeding him IAMS for large breed puppies. Periodically he has dry/itchy skin problems--from what I've read, boxers are prone to this. I've tried some supplements with Amino Fatty Acids without much relief liquid and tablet form). Any suggestions for Adult Dog Large Breed which will help skin problems in the future I can start phasing him in with?

Also have an 8 yo AmStaff/Pointer mix, adopted her at 5, was feeding her IAMS adult (neighbor guys were feeding her -- ACK!! -- bologna--and she's a chunky monkey now). Any recommendations for her, too?

Also--what is BARF, besides what I clean up after my cat? Thanks!! ~renee

BARF

Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food

Sorry Rosita, I don't know from dogs. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Arm and Hammer's Super Scoop is the best litter I've found. It really eliminates odor, it clumps really well, it smells nice, it's kind of sand-like so the cats love digging in it. Buying a quality litter means less mess, you actually use less of it so buying something cheaper may be false economy, less smell, etc.

Get them both off of the IAMS. My best friend has 3 newfs and feeds them Wysong, and she also supplements with Costco's own brand. It would run her into the poor house feeding them strictly on Wysong. Follow previous advice in these posts and get the highest quality food you can with your budget, and try to get food that contains flaxseed oil or omega 3, this will help the coat and skin issues. And with the higher quality foods they usually need to eat less and are getting real nutrition opposed to the empty calories that alot of the foods offer which help puts the weight on. Good luck with your pups.
Take care,
Mary.
