Quality cat food thread

Oh what i totally forgot to ask (and i have received/ read conflicting information about this aswell) - how much dry food do you/ should you feed your cat a day ?
And if i added some canned food to his diet - would it be ok for him to have a whole can ? If so... once a week ? Twice ?
Keep in mind he is
a) a bit on the round side
b) always begging for food
First, what a beautiful kitty!

Buy the small 3.5 oz cans. One of these is more than enough meal for him. Like I said I split one 5.5 oz can of high quality food between 5 cats a day, that's about 1 oz per cat. Not everyone finishes either because it fills them up quickly. Our Maine Coon boy inhales what is left by the others. I am not sure on the dry food. Honestly, do some weight management research since you're worried about his weight. How many calories does it take to put on each pound of weight in a cat? I don't know this. In people, it's 3500 kcal per pound of fat. By cutting 500 calories a day through diet and/or exercise a person will lose 1 pound a week. Because I provide canned food daily, as well, I feed about 3/4 cup a day dry food per cat. I don't know if any of this helps.

Also, I use The Worlds Best Cat Litter, also available at Petco/Petsmart. I have horrendous dust allergies and cannot deal with dusty litter anymore, and the corn base does not bother me. Plus it's 100% flushable.
Take care,
Mary.

I feed my cat Science Diet dry food. It is a special kind of Science Diet though because he is fat(it's in his family and it is impossible for him to be skinny).

Science Diet is a very healthy cat food. It was recommended by our vet. My cat has had some problems in the past and the food has really helped him. He also has to take a fiber pill twice a day.(he loves it though!!).

My cat WANTS this food. If it is ANYWHERE that he can get it..he will..he has before!!!!

Good luck on your new kitty

Get them both off of the IAMS. My best friend has 3 newfs and feeds them Wysong, and she also supplements with Costco's own brand. It would run her into the poor house feeding them strictly on Wysong. Follow previous advice in these posts and get the highest quality food you can with your budget, and try to get food that contains flaxseed oil or omega 3, this will help the coat and skin issues. And with the higher quality foods they usually need to eat less and are getting real nutrition opposed to the empty calories that alot of the foods offer which help puts the weight on. Good luck with your pups.
Take care,
Mary.
Along with what Mary said, check out Breeder's Choice Avoderm:

I've not used it, but I've heard some really good things about it.

I hate to burst your bubble, but you need to read the ingredients list on that bag. The Science Diet Light for overweight cats contains BHA and BHT, known cancer causing ingredients.

Your vet recommends it because Hills awards vets who sell their products with product and free trips et all.

NOT a healthy food at all.

OK so i did some extensive reading over the course of the past days.
Was about to order some FRR because it sounded good what Mduros and Roan said.

Mduros mentioned that rice is a better filler than corn. Now the "normal" and "light" FRR cat food has corn stuff in there. I am confused.

What would be the "general opinion" about this product:

I don't have a petco close by but maybe i can get somebody to pick some stuff up for me there.

Okay, sorry about the confusion there. Yes, FRR does contain corn. I forgot about that. But it is really good on all of the other stuff, and my cats all like it. I am still looking for a link I had that explained all of this food stuff to you in great detail. I did ALOT of research before settling on FRR a couple of years ago as the primary dry food for my cats.

Here's my story. My late cat, Somebody, developed health problems and could not eat food with dyes in it anymore, this was before I knew anything about pet foods. I searched and searched for stuff without dyes that she could hold down. So, I "upgraded" her to Science Diet. Hey, that is a step up from Friskies, you know...? Anyhow, Somebody died at 18 years old from chronic renal failure. That was 8 years ago.

Six months after she died I took in a semi-feral 3 month old kitten. And it is with Bobo, and combining my sig other's and my households for a total of 5 cats that brought me to where I am now. My boyfriend fed his cats Friskies until we moved in together. I moved everyone over to Nutro. Lolita, like Somebody, became intolerant to the food dye in the Friskies right before we moved in together, anyway. Then Lolita could not eat the Nutro anymore, and Buster has a load of skin problems, so I did a crash course study on food. So, I moved everyone over to FRR primary dry, and a secondary dry for backup and variation that I switch on pretty much a monthly basis, sometimes Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken, sometimes Felidae, sometimes Wellness, etc. Lolita can hold down any of these foods and loves FRR the best, they all do. Buster's skin problems have cleared up.

I am still looking for this link to pass on to you. And wow! You're reading the ingredients! That alone will help you make the right decisions. And thank you for noticing and mentioning that.
Mary.

While Mary is clearing that up, I give a general "great choice" vote for the Natural Balance in your link. Good ingredients!

I feed my dogs Natural Balance Regular and Potato & Duck. Thus far, it's the only dry food that Hamish, my blue merle collie, will eat without a canned food addition. The other two collies I have aren't fussy eaters.

I just add some water to Hammie's Natural Balance and he goes nuts on it.

I use the "Chicken Soup" cat food as well. My cat really likes it and she seems to do really well on it. She doesn't puke it up either. So many of the cat foods she pukes up. Since I have been giving it to her she doesn't "complain" so much. It seems to satisfy her.
