ok to start, my chiclids have pretty much been normal for what i have read about there behaviour, but today i noticed that they had dug a hole in the cravel under a branch, and moved a small barrel decoration into the hole. now the chiclid that hangs out in that area, for the last week has been going up to the surface and splashing it with its tail, it will go back and forth maybe 5 times and then return to the bottom level of the aquarium. is this a mating ritual or just a fish being crazy?

they are red zebras. there is one huge one that dominates the tank, and one of the smaller ones is the one tail whipping the water and the big one usually comes up to see whats going on, but i havent seen them get close at all. thats why i wondered if it was mating cause im guessing the big one is male, as well as the gravel being dug up. its cool to see, but kinda distracting while your watching tv, cause you can here the water splash and the bright flash of orange lol.
