Hey guys,
What exactly can you keep with dwarf puffers? I have been reading all the posts...but still don't really have any idea what you can put with those guys! Tetras? Gouramis? Anything??? I'd like to get a couple, and if they need to be by themselves then I have a spare 10 gallon for them.

what, other than the 10 gallon were you considering? Currently, I have 3 in a 55 gallon with 2 adult angels, a red tailed shark, cories, a couple of plecos, and a danio. Some consider them too nippy (fin nippers) but I've never had this problem. I guess the nip tendency varies among individuals.....fortunately, I've never had that problem. For the 10 gallon, the cories and danios may work for ya, I'm not sure about the tetras, I've never had any of those. Of course if you're considering a larger tank, your options are more broad.

good luck!

I do have a 75 gallon, 55 gallon, 38 gallon, sundry and assorted 20 gallons and a couple tens. I have heard of people keeping 2 or 3 dwarf puffers in a ten gallon......and that is what I was wondering about. If they would be ok in there, who can go with them.....or if they need a bigger tank. I just think they are so cute and I have set up a ten gallon in our bedroom....I think they would be a neat fish to have in it!

I started out with my puffers in a 5 gallon tank at work. I've since moved them into my planted 40 at home. They're doing much better in the planted 40--they've grown, and always look plump (they'd be skinny on Mondays, even though I always dumped in a bunch of snails on Fridays).

They do fine in any size tank. My 40 includes gouramies, cories, plecos, neons, blue tetras, kuhli loaches, ect. They chase the gouramies (hysterical--one inch fish chasing the 5 inch monster), are chased by the tetras, and ignore everyone else. I've never seen damage to my gouramies, so I don't think they're hurting them. IMO, making sure they get enough to eat is the hardest part. A planted tank with lots of snails seems best.

I've got 1 dwarf puffer in with 6 neons, 2 albino corys, and a rarely seen bumblebee catfish (Microglanis Iheringi) in a 10 gallon. The tank has plenty of plants and hiding places. It also used to have a lot of snails but since 'puffer' arrived the population has been low and I've had to suppliment them from other tanks to keep him fed. He hasn't bothered the other fish in the tank at all and they haven't bothered him.

One little hint...you will end up needing to vacuum up snail remains. They'll leave the shells of bigger prey and it will rot and make your water nasty if you leave them there.
