Question about "peas"

I was trying to see if our betta would eat peas (incase he ever has a constipation problem). He is so picky that i am afraid he wont touch them if it was ever necessary for him to have them. So i bought some to at least try and see if he "touches" them - NO i dont want to feed them to him all the time lol.

Now on the package it says ingredients peas, salt. Is it still ok to give one to him ? I think the nutritional info states it has 8% sodium in it (you know daily value for human). Soo.... would they be ok to try or not ?

Hrm, personally I would buy frozen peas that have no salt. They'd keep a lot time in the freezer.

Have you thought of using freeze dried daphnia instead of peas? I feed Jakers a little daphnia once a week as a preventative -- it's meat and he loves it -- and it's been known to help "move the mail" in betta fish.

Just a thought,
Roan

Heh, as an aside: I had a SMALL amount of freeze dried daphnia in a baggie in my son's room for occassional feedings for his gourami. One day I didn't quite close the bottom cupboard of the tank stand and our 4 month old rough-coated collie puppy, Fergus, got into it and ate the daphnia. There was only a ½ tsp in the bag, but he had the runs for two days. And the gas! UGH! Man! Youd did NOT want to sit downwind from that boy or lie on the floor with his butt near your face. WHEW!!!!!!!

So, I can testify that it definitely does move the mail -- in collie dogs anyway

I'm more careful now, that's for sure!

Well if you think daphnia will work just as good...
i wanted to get some more (and different food) anyways. I'd probably get frozen though - he doesnt seem to like any dry foods except "his beloved" pellets.
I mistakenly dropped about 8 pellets in at one time once and he ate them so fast i didnt even have time to fish them out - little pig. His stomache was all round after - and thats where my "fear" of constipation comes from and why i want to have some kind of measure if he ever eats too much again.

So now i'll just eat the peas myself - i love them anyways. ;-)

Oh and thanks for your advice - highly appreciated as always.

ROFL! Try the peas by all means! Just won't hurt to try daphnia as well, especially if he decides he doesn't like the peas. Maybe if you soak it before feeding it to him? It's almost a powder, the stuff I have. Maybe even dampen a pellet and roll it in daphnia? Just a thought --

I didnt actually try it yet because i was unsure about the salt content and thought i ask about it first. Should i ever try peas in the future then i will of course remove the outer part and only squeeze the inside out.

Well, it might not have been the best thing to do, but I have even removed a few peas from microwave dinners and saved them for my betta. I only gave him maybe 1/5 of a pea at a time, so I really didn't see it being a problem. Hes still alive and happy :thm: !!! However, if you are getting peas specifically for him, salt free would probably be the best way to go!
