Is is neccessary to add stress zyme every time I do a water change?

I have been having problems with high ammonia and low PH, I have been given wonderful advice on this site and am now doing large water changes and just using a water conditioner and no zyme. When I started my tank 18 months ago I was advised by my LFS to add stress zyme and conditioner when I did a water change. Is this necessary and if so why? I wonder if I have been causing the problems in the tank myself!

Stress zyme claims to contain beneficial bacteria to jump-start your filter, but its mostly marketing hype. I have used it and didn't see any measurable improvement. Use a water conditioner like prime or aquasafe to dechlorinate your water, and regular maintenance and water changes should take care of the rest without additional chemicals.

IMO you shouldn't use stress zyme ever. Only use a good water conditioner as sploke mentioned. It may have actually been causing the problems IMO. Good luck. :)
Agree on the stress zyme and I used Seachem's Stability, which works. I thought I needed a larger bottle but realized that once the tank is cycled you shouldn't need it again unless you are forced to do a major water change, e.g. over 50% and you want to keep the levels as stress free as possible. Even then, if your filter is well established and is your gravel, you shouldn't need it again as the bacteria should keep your ammonia low.

Let me ask you this - what is in your tank that is wrecking your cycle? Too many fish? Dying plants?

Don't have any live plants in that tank, and not overstocked at the moment.

I think what has been wrecking my cycle is the fact that I was too pedantic in cleaning my tank and removed the beneficial bacteria from the filter medium. Then when I tried to correct the ammonia with water changes I added zyme as well as conditioner, so I was added extra bacteria all the time! I am very grateful to this site and it's members for the help and advice given, I live in New Zealand and find it hard to access good advice easily.

whenever your fish store people tell you that you should buy something because you 'need' it, get a second opinion. they might be the nicest people in all of NZ, but they still want to make money.
